PHILOSOPHY
When we think of a leader, we tend to think of those who hold high ranks.
It is not true by any means. All of us are leaders. Some said that a leader should seek for improvement in productivity on the basis of moral dignity, respect of man, and human centered conception. Also leadership is not for the few, but should be taken by all the members of an organization.
Modesty and conscience are the essence to true leadership.
All of us are leaders for ourselves and can be leaders for many like our team managers and CEO is the leader for all employees. We can be true leaders with real vision when we have affirmative attitude on every aspect with modesty and consciences, taking "I can do" or "I will do" instead of saying "I may try" to our fellows and junior staffs.
We have to be prepared for the 'intellectual society'.
Our history has seen the agricultural society, industrial society and now, we are in the society of knowledge and information. The next era will be the 'intellectual society'. The most important asset in the 20th century was the industrial machinery. In the 21st century, intellectual men and women would be the primary asset.
And therefore, the most important thing will be training competent men and women and increase their productivity, therefore making a contribution to the human society. In that sense, we are confident that Daeyang is doing its best at discovering competent human resources and training them. The way of thinking should be geared up to educate and train people to achieve intellectual society changing the paradigm.
To achieve this, we must change our thoughts from materialistic to humane viewpoints. 'Human centered' concept means considering human being as the most important asset and creating an environment so that the members are willing to display their potentials. Our basic management principles to back up this shall be the one to promote wisdom rather than giving guidelines, and strive for self-discipline and effectiveness, not regulation and temporary efficiency.
The administration of the 21st century should break themselves out from the 'Official Dignity', and utilize the 'Intellectual Dignity.' The leaders should serve and respect their internal customers, the 'intellectual workers', and when this paradigm takes root, true vision of the organization will be established. This is the Intellectual Management that we cannot stress more. We have set, in our early days, 'human respect' as the prior corporate value. Striving for this, it is becoming our corporate culture, our Vision. Soon, we will achieve our vision through the 'intellectual process of tasks' that utilizes the maximum human potentials.
We believe that not only human beings, but also corporations, possess souls. Corporate souls are the sum of all of its members. We would conclude in my own words, the following equation : "A corporation that has a soul' = 'corporation that has ethical management
The management issue that has become the concern of all corporations, domestic or international, is transparent management, and righteous management. These could be summarized as the current issue,
'The Ethic Management.' Corporations interpret these words as merely not to be corrupt or to take social responsibility. However, the shipping industry is made up of global corporations.
We would like to start by acknowledging the fact that ethic management, which could be broken down to transparent and righteous management, is the 'core competence' that promises a long-term benefits for the company.
In other words, ethic management is no longer in level of doing a good deed, but it has established itself as the 'key element of cooperate competitiveness.' Regardless of the size and the characteristics of the industry, in order for all corporations to benefit from continuous growth, they must accept ethic management as a necessary element of survival. We cannot survive any more by retaining the corporate structure of the past century, which only pursues profit by demanding sacrifice of human and nature. Only a corporation with a soul, a corporation that is respected, could stand out as the future corporation who creates constant profits.
We stress to you again, a corporation is also a living organism and thus has its separate soul as a human being. What would happen if a corporation sells its soul as Faust did, in the deal with Mephist ? What we are trying to say is that a corporation must invest its disposable sources in the improvement of its employees, development of their human nature, and services to its employees and customers. Only then, it could rejuvenate as a corporation with a soul.
Furthermore, the starting point of a corporation is the most appropriate when the values of the employees coincides with the ideology of the corporation. We are the soul of this company. A soul could be a CEO, or any colleague we interact everyday. The important thing is how much we are devoted to this soul and whether we could become a true leader who can inspire and blow in enthusiasm to our colleagues. If more and more employees devote their lives in the soul that coincides with ethic management, the potentials for constant growth will increase and this would become the true benchmark for a corporation's success. Corporations of today require a true leader. This does not mean a president or a chairman by title, but a true leader who is committed to the soul at each levels within the organization.
We believe in order for us to live a life that is committed to the corporate soul, we must be faithful towards ourselves. If we devote our lives in creating a corporation with a soul, we could inspire and blow in enthusiasm to our colleagues. Hence we would learn the greatest value from the person right next to us, and hope to say, "You are my colleague and the soul of our company."
As I've lived half a century and experienced various ground transportation means from primitive a-frame carrier and bicycle-drawn cart to power driven vehicles such as cars and trains. Conveyance by water has been developed from boats to vessels with power and transportation in large quantities has derived from the advent of large vessels.
Since the beginning of carriage of mass commodities through shipping, from the view point of civilization, seaborne transportation has made the standard of human life more prosperous.
We have a mandate as servant to provide seaborne service to those who are in need of commodity all around the world.
When we think of a burden we think of something heavy, hard or a great responsibility. Jesus Christ used this word, when he saw the weariness of our lives, calling us to rest, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
We are maybe one of the best servants mankind. Among those who are in the field of various services, we, who are in charge of seaborne transportation, are maybe the greatest servants of mankind. We are the servants who carry other people's burden. We should take pride in our work and service.
We may be here, in this place, to serve mankind all around the world. We should appreciate the great responsibilities given to us and should be happy to serve the sea and the world. No matter how difficult and heavy a burden lay upon ourselves and when we carry our vision that we are the greatest servants in the world and fulfill our duties, Daeyang shipping will tower above the world as a number one bulk shipping company.
